The countdown is on! The next chapter of KCYP is right around the corner, with our program leaders busy and getting ready to welcome our 2026 cohort of Kokoda Kids. This year marks an exciting expansion of the program, with participants joining us across three locations: Gold Coast, Brisbane and a brand-new Ipswich cohort for 2026.
We’re especially thrilled to be returning to PNG for the peak experience completing the Kokoda Trek and can’t wait to see what this year has in store with our young people. This life-changing journey continues to be a highlight for our participants, and we can’t wait to see the growth, resilience, and unforgettable moments that will unfold along the track this year.
As we gear up for another transformative year, we’re proud to introduce (and reintroduce) the passionate volunteer leaders guiding this year’s program and inspiring our youth alongside our Program Leader, Sam and our dedicated Kokoda Youth Foundation team.

BRISBANE LEADERS
MARTY – GROUP LEADER
I’m a Geologist by trade but I love hiking and a good trip into the wilderness when I’m not at a desk. I was a Brisbane leader in 2024 with an amazing group of kids and leaders and seeing how much they (and I) got out of it, I guess I’m back for more!
CHRISSYÂ
This will be my first time completing the 96km distance but Its been a bucket list item of mine since I fell in love with the concept in 2018 when I first completed the GC 48km. As a Teacher Aide & Youth Worker, I’m passionate about helping young people build resilience & become the best versions of themselves.
AMYÂ
I am passionate about my work as a youth mental health outreach/ functional recovery manager, and the community I get to support and advocate for. Having grown up in more rural areas and with a love of adventure, I come with a range of crazy, wild, and interesting stories!
CHARLIE
I was a Kokoda Kid in 2016 when I was in grade 12. I chose to volunteer this year as I know how life-changing it can be firsthand, and how important it is to learn the values of a team at a young age. I also joined because the thought of being able to help the Kokoda Kids through even one obstacle they have going on in their life is a win for me.
IPSWICH LEADERS
SUE – GROUP LEADER
I have always been a Brissie leader so looking forward to a new challenge. I have come back as a Leader again this year because I miss the kids and the wonderful journey we go on together! Especially watching the kids grow, show amazing resilience, strength and mateship!
MICHAEL
I’m a dad of 4 children to go through the KCYP. I have been a primary school teacher for just over 20 years and still love it. I’ve seen how life-changing the program has been for my kids and their friends. I’ve seen and met amazing leaders and other people from the KCYP community.
JAMES
I chose to volunteer with the KCYP because I strongly believe in the impact that challenge, teamwork, and resilience can have on young people. Programs like this give kids the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, back themselves, and realise they’re capable of far more than they think.
KAYCEE
I am wanting to connect and hopefully inspire the youth through this program and help support and encourage them on this challenge. I know we will be stepping out of their comfort zone, but we will be doing it together. I am also a mum of 4 kids!
GOLD COAST LEADERS
SUSAN WRIGHT — GROUP LEADER
This will be my second year as a leader in KCYP, after a powerful and life-changing experience in 2023. If I’m not in a Kokoda Challenge, then I’m volunteering at the events – which is just as special! Weekends are chilling with friends and family or sneaking in an occasional hike with a few Kokoda buddies in the GC hinterland!
CALISTA
I study Social Work and am a teachers aid. I’m passionate about seeing young people push themselves. Throughout my career I have seen young people live their lives without genuine connection, purpose and care. I want to interrupt this cycle. I chose to volunteer to inspire young people that there is hope and healthy people who care about them.
STEPHENÂ
I’ve been involved in the program since 2013, leading multiple school groups on the 96km and 48km. I’m also a Kokoda Dad – my eldest son, completed the program in 2018 and now serves in the RAAF. I have family connections to the original Kokoda campaign in the 1940s, so the track carries a bit of personal history for me.
JACK
I grew up in the southwest of the England. I went to boarding school from the age of 8 years old to 18 due to my father being in the UK Army for 40 years. I have always played sport and enjoyed life outdoors. I thoroughly enjoy the outdoors, and I am really motivated to inspire appreciation of it in young people.
